Written for friend and colleague, Rachel Nulf, and inspired by works of feminist poets such as Sonya Renee Taylor, Nikita Gill, and Lucille Clifton, the body is illustrates the complexities surrounding one's self-image—namely, how it can fluctuate over time and be subconsciously influenced by others. This piece speaks to the darkness one faces during periods of struggle with self-image and general self-concept, yet it also conveys the strength and grace that come as invaluable byproducts of prioritizing self-love.
the body is abstractly portrays two individuals on their unique processes of becoming comfortable in their skin. Sometimes, they express themselves independently, while at others, they come together with frenzied, intertwined dialogue. Opening with a solemn tone, this flute duet is characterized by various moods throughout—as our real-life journeys of ‘self’ do—but it ultimately pushes towards an inspired finish as it looks resolutely towards the future.
